Mountain Wells

Due to springs in the area, Mountain Wells was an important source of water for the Pony Express after July 1861 (prior to this, the Pony Express followed a route further south to Sand Springs), as well as the Overland Mail Company and nearby mining camps like La Plata. In later days it also serviced various freight and stage routes between Fallon, Stillwater, Wonder, and Fairview, and the Lincoln Highway's "Stillwater Cutoff" passed through here until the road across Fourmile and Eightmile Flats was improved in the early 1920s.
