McDermitt

Originally known as Dugout, McDermitt was established as a support for Fort McDermitt, located about 5 miles away. Both were named for Lt. Col. Charles McDermit. The town has always relied on agriculture as its mainstay, but mercury mining was done to the west from 1917-89, and from 1933-89 the mines were the most profitable in the nation.
