Erie

Erie was a non-agency station and community on the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (the "Salt Lake Route", later part of the Union Pacific). Though the railroad reached the area in 1904, only a temporary shoo-fly was built between Erie - at the summit - and the Las Vegas Valley below while a permanent grade was constructed. The permanent line was completed by May 26, 1905, and Erie became the location of a wye to store helper engines to assist with the climb from both the Las Vegas and Ivanpah Valleys. Improvements to steam locomotives, followed by their replacement by diesel engines, led to Erie's eventual abandonment.
