Kiernan

John and Philippa Kiernan settled along the Meadow Valley Wash about 1876, where they started a ranch selling produce such as potatoes, grapes, melons, apricots, and almonds to Delamar, Pioche, and other mining camps of the area. By the 1890s, Mr. Kiernan was involved with mining nearby, and in 1891 Mrs. Kiernan was appointed postmistress of the new post office on their ranch, which lasted more than a dozen years.

In 1900, the Kiernans' daughter Josephine was married to Monroe Thomas in Provo, Utah. Following John's death in 1904, Thomas took over the old Kiernan Ranch. That year also marked the arrival of the railroad, though the nearest sidings were almost 2½ miles away. In 1908, the Kiernan post office was reopened with Mrs. Thomas as postmistress, this time lasting until 1912. The following year, the family sold the ranch to R.P. Henrie. The Kiernan name lived on, though, with the establishment of a new school district several months later, consisting of eleven students. The school district lasted until at least 1922, and the ranch was later sold off and abandoned.
