Grant City
The Grant District was organized in October 1868 (taking its name for Ulysses S. Grant, who would be elected President the next month), and shortly thereafter the townsite of Grant City was laid out. By the following summer, Grant City's population exceeded 100 and several stone buildings were erected. Unfortunately, despite initial assays of $500-$600/ton, it was soon found that the low-grade silver ore could not sustain the camp and, coupled with the rush to Hamilton, Grant City was abandoned by 1870. A brief revival in the early 1880s brought twenty-five back to the camp, but this ended by 1884. Only isolated activity has occurred since, including the use of the old site as a summer lodge by a family from Los Angeles from the 1940s through the 60s.
