Green Springs

[Not to be confused with Green Springs in Nye County]

As early at 1869, Green Springs was a water stop for those bound for Hamilton and the White Pine District; it was even the contender for a proposed post office at the time. By 1875 a ranch owned by George D. Freeland had been established at the springs, and during the next several years it was the site of a saloon, racetrack, and brothel. Freeland remained at the ranch until his death in 1893.

In 1899, the Green Springs Ranch was purchased from Archie Beaton by the four Rosevear brothers, natives of Cornwall, England: John, Joseph, James, and Thomas. Before long, the other three brothers sold their interests to Joe, who unfortunately died in 1900 leaving the ranch to his widow Bessie. Nevertheless, Bessie continued ranching, raising hay and cattle and growing potatoes to sell throughout the area. She died in 1940, but the ranch remains in the family today and was recognized as a Nevada Centennial Ranch in 2005.
