Menken
In January 1869, the Mazeppa mine was located in similarly-named Mazeppa Canyon near Eberhardt. Both were named for a popular play of the 1860s, and in February a townsite was laid out and named Menken for the play's leading lady, Adah Isaacs Menken. As many as 300 rushed to Menken, the only business in which was a store owned by William C. Masten. Though ore valued at $1,000/ton was produced during the summer, the Mazeppa soon played out and Menken was abandoned by the end of the year.
